Blurred Lines is a feminist, queer-led short film, starring Emmerdale’s Matthew Woolfenden, that explores the impact of county lines through a feminist horror lens. Written by a Grimsby-born creative who has witnessed the effects of exploitation first-hand, the social issue film follows a queer teenage girl groomed into a drug gang, blending social realism with psychological horror to reveal the blurred boundaries between protection and control.
A private industry premiere will be held at the Stevenage Borough Council Chambers, scheduled for May 2026.
This project is supported by finishing funds from Stevenage Borough Council and Friends of SADA.
On a freezing winter night Ellie, a queer, straight-A teenager, misses the last train home after making a drug delivery. While waiting on a bench until morning, she meets Billie, a non-binary lesbian, and the two connect over queer identity, hardship and loneliness. Billie soon learns it’s Ellie’s birthday.
Through flashbacks, we see how Ellie ended up in this world, despite not fitting the typical profile.
With the cost-of-living crisis worsening, more young people are being drawn into criminal exploitation. Over 46,000 children and vulnerable adults are estimated to be caught up in this, often unaware of the risks, though the real number is likely much higher.
